Marie Leocadie

Born in Paris, raised in Montreal, and now based in Brooklyn, I work primarily in porcelain to explore the body's internal landscape. Beginning with a wheel-thrown form, I slowly transform its surface through the repetitive application of hundreds of hand-formed tendrils. They emerge gradually, overtaking the body as though something within has become impossible to contain. What begins as a vessel gradually becomes a body.

I'm interested in sensations that resist language: the tightening of the throat before tears, the weight of carrying something too large to remain inside. Having lived between French and English for most of my life, I've become increasingly aware of the limitations of language itself. Some sensations refuse translation. Clay became the only place where those experiences no longer required it.
